  • Investigation and discussion of students' interests, needs and expectations. It is hoped that this module provides an opportunity for students to plan their projects for the entire year and anticipate aesthetic and technical requirements here, or to investigate possible courses of action.

    Read through the course materials and requirements, paying particular attention to what is required in terms of assessment. Try to plan out what you might want to do and when and whether you feel you have any particular needs, interests or areas requiring additional work.

    Review Module handbook; plan and prepare Presentation 1, based on your earlier investigations. Your presentation, which will be marked negatively, will provide an overview of what you might attempt and achieve over the course.

  • Hardware Hacking/Circuit Bending - 10%
  • MaxMSP - 10%
  • SuperCollider - 10%
  • Own Project - 70%
    Indicative projects include:
  • Algorithmic Composition;
  • Instrumental composition and the interface;
  • Investigating and developing novel interfaces;
  • Algorithmic methods for score generation;
  • Integration of technologies;
  • Composing for specific media.

  • A series of workshops and tutorials investigating possible activities, aesthetics, techniques and methods. While these may be significantly self-directed, should you require direction it will be provided.

    It may be the case that individual students or small groups of students may require specialist tuition in certain technologies.

  • NB These projects have been developed specifically for the 2009-10 cohort and this structure does not precisely accord with the published Module Guide.
    • Portfolio including:
    • Circuit Bending Exercise (10% of total)

      • Default exercise: this may be altered in discussion with tutor.
      • Create a simple hardware hack using a toy, and up to two controls.
      • Recommended controls include switches, potentiometers and light dependent resistors.
      • Document your hack with photos, videos, a write-up (max. 500 words) and a short performance if appropriate.
    • MaxMSP/Jitter Exercise (10% of total)

      • Default exercise: this may be altered in discussion with tutor.
      • Create a simple patch in MaxMSP enabling you to generate a soundscape in performance.
      • Recommended objects include sfplay~, buffer~ and groove~.
      • Document your patch with screenshots, videos, a write-up (max. 500 words) and a short performance if appropriate.
    • SuperCollider Exercise (10% of total)

      • Default exercise: this may be altered in discussion with tutor.
      • Create a simple patch in SC which generates an algorithmic composition.
      • Document your patch with screenshots, videos, a write-up (max. 500 words) and a short performance if appropriate.
    • Own-choice Project (70% of total)
